Should I pay for a logo? It's a constant question every business owner has and I'm here to tell you that the answer is...it depends.
I will also answer some follow up questions such as:
How much does a logo cost?
Isn't it a little too expensive?
Which is better?
Let's break this down by first defining what a logo is.
A logo is a symbol using text, shapes or a combination of both that is used to identify a company, it's an essential tool and one of the first things your customers see.
That being said there are many types of logos and below you'll find a few examples.

How much does it cost/ Isn't it too expensive?
The cost of a logo depends on who you choose to design it, prices can range from $20 USD to $10000+ USD (based on the skills, experience and portfolio of the designer). The cost sometimes can be off putting at first and because of this many businesses may choose to find free logo makers/alternatives but before anyone goes searching for free templates, I want to make one thing clear, when you purchase a logo from an experienced designer YOU ARE GUARANTEED QUALITY!
Every business regardless of if you're starting up or have been running a company for years, NEEDS A LOGO!, it is a key identifier for your business to your clientele.
But, should I pay?/ Which is better?
The design process of a logo is hard work. A designer (like me) spends a lot of time on research and sketches alone to ensure your logo represents your vision. Making a logo is a difficult task but, with a designer, you are getting an ORIGINAL design that you can use to whatever extent you choose.
There are many free/cheap alternatives online to be honest I think they have their uses and benefits for example.
It is a new venture that you are unsure of.
The business will not exist for a long period of time.
Cost effective.
But there's also cons the main two being.
Trademarking the logo can be tricky.
Someone else will/may have your exact logo with small differences
But again if you are just wanting to try something new or safe money IN THE BEGINNING, then the free option may be the best fit. However if you are a company that wants to be a household name, then you should purchase a logo for the following reasons.
The said logo would be yours and yours alone for your company.
Trademarking would be easier since you own the rights.
Your business would look more professional than businesses that used a template.
It makes your company STAND OUT to clients and competitors alike.
To close off this I want to make sure that it understood that I in no way am saying that having a professionally designed logo makes ones business better than the other, however it does yield more benefits.
But regardless, template or not, a business is like a marriage and you wouldn't go into a marriage haphazardly right?
